Hurricane sandy was the 18th named hurricane of the 2012 hurricane season. This storm was so massive, that when it came onto New Jersey shores, the effects were felt as far as the mountains of Tennessee and in west virginia. More than 200 deaths caused by this monstrous storm, most of which were in the United states. The size of the storm brought great concern about future storms of equal or greater size. And with people not evacuating when told to do so, a lot can go wrong.
Origin Sandy began as a tropical wave in the Caribbean on october 19th 2012. it quickly developed from here into a tropical depression, and then into a tropical storm. It was officially considered a hurricane on october 24th when the winds reached 74 miles per hour. The storms first victim was Jamaica. After moving over the island, the storm gained strength over the open ocean and became a category 2 hurricane. The next victim was cuba, which weakened the hurricane back to a category one. On october 26th, the storm briefly rolled over the bahamas and weakened down to a tropical storm once again. It soon gained strength once again as it moved up to the east coast of north America.
Damage The effects of this hurricane far exceeded the expectations of those who predicted it. This hits close to home when one sees the damage done at our very own jersey shore. In total, 38 billion dollars in damage had been done to new jersey, and new york when sandy came on shores. However, after a tour of the battered area, President Obama and Governor chris christie seem to be confident in the rebuilding. (Gabbat)
Global Warming
Hurricane Sandy brings up quite interesting points of view on global warming. The warming of the earth through the "greenhouse effect", would surely lead to larger storms being formed. Jennifer Francis, a rutgers scientist, had a lot to say about the inevitable new weather patterns. Her observations showed a pattern connecting the melting ice caps, to the odd weather formations during that autumn "It’s probably going to be a very interesting winter," she said, only a few weeks shy of this terrible hurricane.(Star Ledger) 2 days after the hurricane, Mayor Michael Btoomberg endorsed Barack Obama due to his belief that President Obama would do a better joe addressing global warming, then former governor, Mitt Romney. This shows that decisions were made to let the public know that there is a problem, and if not stopped, our worlds weather patterns have taken a turn for the worse. (Star Ledger)
